An extensive set in photo-etched sheet from the Czech maker Hauler, cut for the Tamiya kit. It is not a model but an accessory for a modeler who wants to go markedly beyond the level of a build out of the box on this tank. In its scope it is among the larger sets, so count on the work with it forming a separate stage of the build.
The Ausf. J was the last production version of the medium tank Pz.Kpfw. IV. It arose under the sign of simplifying manufacture: among other things the auxiliary unit for electrical traverse of the turret disappeared from it, so that the crew turned the turret by hand, and the space freed up served for a larger fuel load. The main armament consisted of a 7.5 cm gun with a long barrel, and the hull and turret were protected by Schürzen side shields, on later machines in a wire form. It is precisely these surface elements that suffer most from the limitations of injection-molded plastic on a model.
The shields, covers, grilles, tool brackets and equipment holders are of thin sheet and wire on the real tank. In an injection mold they cannot be made thinner than roughly a millimeter, so on a model in 1:48 they carry several times the right thickness. Photo-etched sheet evens this proportion out, and the difference is seen most precisely on the surfaces that surround the tank all the way round.
Cut with a scalpel on a hard surface, do not break. Make the bends in a bending tool in one stroke; longer straight parts, such as the shields, will bend crooked without a bending tool and it shows on the model. Degrease the sheet with alcohol before gluing, glue with cyanoacrylate in drops transferred with a wire, and on long joints use a slow epoxy. Spray the finished photo-etched parts with primer, as without it the paint cracks on metal. On the shields it pays to suggest damage, a missing piece or a bend, because in period photographs these plates are only rarely whole and straight.
This is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
