The surface of the Lightning II is not uniform. The covers of openings, the edges of doors and the areas around the weapons bays have a different surface character and a different degree of sheen from the surrounding finish, so in photographs they stand out as a map of irregular shapes. Without them a model comes across as flat, even if the shade is matched exactly. The difference tends to be most apparent in pictures taken in sharp side light.
The difference between a panel and its surroundings is small; it is more a change of shade and sheen than a different color. Let the base gray dry fully hard, lay the masks on a cool surface and spray the second shade heavily thinned, in two or three misty layers. A final semi-matte varnish over the whole model will then help to unify the result. Do not rush the removal until the last layer has flashed off.
