Cut masking stencils for the outlines of the radar absorbent material panels on the carrier-borne F-35C Lightning II. Cut for the shapes of the Kitty Hawk kit in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F-35C came about for the aircraft carriers of the US Navy. Compared with the other versions it received a larger wing with folding tips, heavier landing gear and an arrestor hook, so that it would stand up to a catapult launch and a hard touchdown on the deck. The outer skin of the aircraft is covered by a network of areas of a material that damps the reflection of a radar beam, and these differ from the surrounding surface in shade. It is precisely that fine mosaic that makes an otherwise single-color machine an interesting object for modelers.
The film carries the outlines of those areas for the whole airframe, that is for the fuselage, the wings, the tail and the surroundings of the internal weapons bays. The procedure is simple: first the base tone is sprayed, once it has dried the stencils are stuck on and only the exposed part is oversprayed. The edge then comes out sharp and even, which is practically impossible to repeat by going over it with a brush. The shapes are derived from the parts of the Kitty Hawk kit and may fit another release of the same type only partly.
The film holds firmly enough to keep paint from getting under it, and at the same time it can be removed after spraying without damaging the finish. It can be handled with tweezers or with a pointed toothpick.
Before sticking it on, it is worth leaving the film for a while in the warmth of the room, because a cold backing follows the rounded transitions at the leading edges less well. Carry small parts on the tip of a scalpel, not with your fingers.
