The fourth sheet of Soviet national insignia for 1:48 models. It follows on from the previous parts of the series and brings a further set of sizes for machines whose star size does not match the usual breakdown.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Soviet Air Force had no single size of national insignia for all its machines. A fighter with a narrow fuselage, a ground-attack aircraft with a broad flank and a twin-engine bomber called for stars of different sizes, and the practice of individual factories and field workshops differed as well. A set divided among several sheets therefore makes sense: each covers a different range of sizes and a modeler reaches for the one that matches his subject. The fourth part in the series extends the choice where the previous sheets leave off.
The insignia goes onto the model only after the camouflage scheme has been sprayed, that is onto a surface already made uneven by transitions of color and by suggested panels. The procedure has its logic. The spot is overcoated with gloss and left to cure thoroughly, because soft varnish wrinkles under the pressure of a brush. The film is slid onto a film of water and adjusted, then the surplus is drawn off and a softening agent is added that pulls the film into the grooves. Over the dried insignia goes a matte or semi-gloss varnish at the end, so that the glossy patch beneath it disappears.
A silvery haze under the insignia means the surface was not glossy enough. A wavy edge comes from too strong a softener or from repeated touching. A cracked film is usually the result of the element being transferred dry. And watch out for older sheets, on which the adhesive weakens over time; a few drops of a fixing solution in the water will help.
The sheet is tied to the scale, not to one kit.
