The Supermarine Spitfire Tr.9 is the two-seat trainer conversion of the Spitfire Mk IX. The front cockpit was moved forward and a second, higher-set cockpit for the instructor was added behind it, with its own canopy. Aircraft of this kind were created by converting single-seat machines and served for training, so they have the typical Spitfire silhouette with an elliptical wing but an unusually long glazed upper fuselage. It is precisely that which makes them a rewarding subject: the model differs from an ordinary Spitfire at first glance.
Photo-etched parts are made by etching the outline out of thin metal sheet, so they are considerably thinner than a part could ever be molded from plastic. On a model they come into their own exactly where sheet metal should look like sheet metal. On the two-seat conversion you can moreover see inside through the large glazed area, so work on the interior is doubly worthwhile. The parts list and their placement are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
Separate the part from the sheet with a sharp blade on a hard surface and sand the remains of the tab down. Use a bending tool or two blades laid against the score line and fold the part in one movement along its whole length. Make the joints with cyanoacrylate glue in an amount you can carry on a pin, otherwise the glue is squeezed out around it and dulls the surface. Before painting, wash the metal, degrease it and lay down a primer, so the paint has something to hold on to.
