About product

Voyager Model 1:48 Tiger I, early configuration for African service — photo-etched set

An aftermarket set of photo-etched brass in 1:48 scale, meant for the plastic kit given in the product name. On its own it is not a kit and holds no plastic part. It concentrates on the early configuration of the vehicle, so it makes sense only on a model of the matching version.

The real subject

The Tiger I was a German heavy tank of the Second World War with the 8.8 cm KwK 36 gun and heavy, practically unsloped plate armor. Early production examples differed from the later ones in a series of technical details, among them the cylindrical commander's cupola, the configuration of the fenders and the auxiliary air intake system routed to the rear. Vehicles deployed in North Africa at the turn of 1942 and 1943 also had modifications for operating in dusty conditions.

Building and painting tips

Metal behaves differently under paint from plastic, and that shows above all in the surface finish. First degrease the brass thoroughly with alcohol or mineral spirits and do not touch it with bare fingers; a single fingerprint is enough for the paint to come away later. Next comes a primer for metal in a genuinely thin coat, and only then the base shade. Desert schemes tempt you into a heavy application of light paint, but that is exactly what clogs the fine engraving of the photo-etched parts; it is better to build the shade up gradually from several translucent coats. Wear down to the metal then only needs suggesting with a hard pencil or dark pigment on the edges, because the brass itself shows through convincingly enough on its own.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the early configuration of the vehicle rather than a later batch
  • Builders who want small sheet-metal features at a scale thickness
  • Anyone interested in German armor in 1:48 scale

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, which it does not include. The glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a photo-etched add-on set for the plastic kit given in the product name, which has to be obtained separately.

The set is prepared for the early configuration. The later batches differ in details, so some of the parts would not fit on another version or would be historically wrong.

Only after the surface is prepared. Degrease the brass, do not touch it with your fingers and spray it with a thin coat of primer for metal, otherwise the paint flakes off the smooth surface.
