Nine marking options for eight two-seat carrier fighters of the United States Marine Corps from 1966 to 1974. One machine is covered in two forms, the second of which carries British naval markings.
Responsibility details are not available.
The sheet concentrates on the two-seat carrier fighters of the United States Marine Corps in the period when units still had freedom in their finishes and every squadron showed its allegiance with a combination of letters and colors of its own. There are nine marking options, two of which belong to the same airframe and differ only in the markings it received while operating from a foreign deck.
Two training squadrons and five combat squadrons are included, and for every machine the serial number, the two-letter unit code and the year are given. The span of time runs from the second half of the 1960s to 1974, that is across the whole period the type was used both from shore bases and from decks.
The machine with the fuselage number belonging to the wing commander is offered twice: once as it flew from an American ship and again in the form it took while operating from a British deck, when it received the additional markings of the host navy. For a modeler it is the most interesting choice on offer.
The procedure is the usual one: gloss varnish, a brief soak, settling onto a wet surface and pressing down with a cotton swab. On large insignia on the fuselage it pays to use a decal softener, because they have to settle across riveted seams. The kit and the paints do not belong with the sheet and have to be obtained separately. Anyone building the version from a shore base should count on service in a tropical setting fading the paint quickly, so it pays to lighten the shade of the base finish.
