A resin engine set from Metallic Details. It captures the American Wright R-3350 radial engine, one of the most powerful piston aircraft engines of its day. The set is meant to replace the simplified engine from an injection-molded kit, or for an open engine nacelle or a diorama with the powerplant stripped down. It is not an airplane kit - it is an accessory that makes sense wherever the engine will be visible.
The Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone is an air-cooled eighteen-cylinder engine arranged in two rows of nine cylinders. It appeared at the end of the 1930s and became famous above all as the powerplant of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber. In the postwar years, in turbo-compound form, where the exhaust gases drove turbines that added power to the crankshaft, it found its way into airliners and naval machines. Characteristic is the dense tangle of exhaust stacks and drives around both rows of cylinders, which injection-molded plastic usually cannot manage and which makes the engine a rewarding feature to look at.
First wash the castings in warm water with detergent, so that no mold release agent is left on them. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw or a cutter, never snap them, and level the mating surface with abrasive paper - with an engine it matters that it sits square in the nacelle. Sand wet and protect your airways, because resin dust is not to be breathed in. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Apply a primer before painting. The cylinders and heads are usually sprayed in a dark metal shade and the crankcase in a lighter one, and the whole is then tied together with a dark wash that runs in between the fins. Finish the exhaust stacks at the end in rust and soot shades.
