Colorful markings for the aerobatic Zlin Z-50s of the Polish Zelazny team, one of the fixtures of the European air show season.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Zelazny aerobatic team is one of the most visible civilian formations in Central Europe. Its display is built on tight formations, smoke trails and low passes that reliably lift the crowd out of their seats at air shows.
The team's working machine is the Zlin Z-50, a single-seat aerobatic special from Otrokovice. It appeared in the mid-1970s as an answer to the demands of the top competition class and made its name with a stiff structure, an air-cooled flat six-cylinder engine and the ability to take extreme g-loads in both directions.
Compared with competition aircraft, display machines carry far bolder artwork: contrasting bands, numbers on the wing and lettering on the fuselage that has to stay legible from several hundred meters away. A model in 1:48 scale therefore stands out even in a display case full of gray military machines.
The foundation is a smooth white clear coat on which the colored elements will not go dull. Transfer the large bands onto a wet surface so that they can still be moved, and only then settle them. The set contains only the decal sheet; get the model separately.
Civilian aerobatic machines do in a collection exactly what military equipment cannot: they bring color. A small single-seat special also takes up a fraction of the room, so it fits even where there is no longer space for another fighter. At the same time it is a model on which it pays to spend time polishing the clear coat, because a smooth glossy surface is part of the subject.
