The Sakawa belonged to the Agano class, that is to the late Japanese light cruisers that were to lead destroyer forces. Against older ships of the same category she was a modern vessel with a slender hull, main armament of 15.2 cm caliber in twin turrets, torpedo armament and facilities for a floatplane. She reached service only at the close of the war, when the Japanese fleet lacked both fuel and escorts, so she did not take part in the large battles. She came through the war and perished only after it, in postwar tests in the Pacific.
The name gives the version with the whole hull, so the model comes about including the underwater part and not only down to the waterline. On the finished ship the shape of the bottom, the propellers and the rudder are visible, and a stand suits it for display. The subject measured around one hundred and seventy-five meters, so in 1:700 scale the model comes out at roughly twenty-five centimeters in length and fits into a smaller display case as well.
First join the halves of the hull and sand the seam in the side carefully, because it would be visible on the finished model. Only then do the deck, the superstructure, the turrets and the boats come in turn. Separate the thin masts and gun barrels with a sharp blade; with cutters they break. Mark the dividing line at the waterline with masking tape before spraying and apply the paint in thin coats, so that the fine surface detail does not disappear.
For collectors of the Japanese fleet whose display case lacks a less usual ship from the end of the war. The kit is supplied unassembled; paints, glue and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
