Shaped fillers for the wheel bays for models of the Spitfire Mk.I and Mk.V in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
One box covers two versions at once, because the Spitfire Mk.I and Mk.V have practically identical wings and wheel bays. The foam shapes are pressed into the opening, hold without glue and are simply taken out once the coat is finished. The outline is derived from one particular kit in this scale.
The Mk.I is the Spitfire with which the Royal Air Force went into the Battle of Britain: a Merlin engine, eight 7.7 mm machine guns and fabric patches taped over the gun muzzles. The Mk.V came in 1941 as a quick answer to the new German fighters, received the more powerful Merlin 45 and, in the Vb version, a pair of 20 mm cannons. It became the most numerous variant of the whole type and served from Malta through North Africa as far as northern Australia. On both of them the landing gear retracted outward into shallow bays, which are conspicuously visible on a finished model.
Finish and paint the bays and the landing gear legs first. Insert the foam so that it lines up with the outline of the opening, but do not force it inside, because overpushed foam will let paint under the edge. Before varnishing, make sure that it does not protrude anywhere past the outline of the wing, otherwise a sharp step will form. Pull it out with tweezers only once the last coat has dried.
