The frames of the Phantom's two-part canopy and the hubs of its wheels are among the places where masking by hand swallows the most time. The set handles them with pre-cut pieces, both for the inner and for the outer side of the glazing. The cut is worked out for the Tamiya 61121 kit.
The F-4B was the first Phantom introduced in numbers with the US Navy. A pair of J79 engines, radar in a substantial nose and armament made up exclusively of guided missiles made it a fighter of a kind that had not existed before. It was the B models that flew the first years of combat over Vietnam, and the experience from them led to changes that carried over into the later versions. The raised wingtips and the drooped tailplane are characteristic and make the type unmistakable.
The wheel hubs are sprayed separately from the tires, and it is exactly here that a mask saves the most work. The thin carrier gives way to the curve of the canopy and leaves no ridge under the paint. Mask the cockpit in two stages, letting the inside dry between them, otherwise the frame smears when the canopy is closed. Before spraying it helps to run a matte varnish over the joints so that the edge of the frame does not break. Spray the frames themselves perpendicular from above, otherwise the paint bleeds under the edge.
