A set of masks for the camouflage finish of a model of the F-4 Phantom II in the rendering from the time of its deployment in Vietnam, 1:48 scale. The elements are cut to the shape of the individual fields of the pattern, so the boundary of the colors comes out exactly and the same on both sides of the model.

Why masks are worth it with this pattern

The machines deployed in Southeast Asia wore a camouflage made up of several darker fields on the upper surfaces and a light underside. The boundaries between the fields were sharp, not sprayed out, and it is exactly that kind of transition that is hardest to do freehand: every field has to follow on across the fuselage, the wing and the tail surfaces and must not go astray when seen from above. A cut mask takes that work over and saves repeated measuring.

The painting procedure

• Wash and degrease the surface and let the previous layer dry properly.
• Always stick the mask on before spraying the next shade, not after it, and press the edges down carefully.
• Choose the order of the shades according to the manufacturer's instructions; in general you work from the lighter color to the darker.
• Spray thin coats, so that no noticeable step forms at the edge of the mask.
• Take the mask off once the paint has set, pulling at a sharp angle, not perpendicular upward.
• Finally even out the whole surface with varnish, so that all the fields have the same gloss.

For builders of Phantoms who want an exact camouflage pattern and do not want to trace it from a drawing, and for modelers whose fields on the upper side of the wing have so far gone astray. The set is cut for one particular kit, so before buying compare whether it matches yours.
