About product

Aires/Quickboost, Westland Wessex HC.2: engine cooling (1:72)

This product is an accessory for a kit, not a model. It contains resin castings of the engine cooling system parts for the Westland Wessex HC.2 helicopter in 1:72 scale, specifically for the plastic kit from Airfix. The package contains neither the kit nor paints nor glue.

What the set solves

The Wessex has its engine section in the front part of the fuselage and both the intake and the cooling of the power plant are led out to the surface; these shapes are exactly what makes the silhouette of the helicopter distinctive. Injection-molded plastic tends to be a compromise in these places: the edges are thicker because the part has to leave the mold, and the depressions are shallower. Resin is cast in a different kind of mold, so it manages crisper transitions, deeper depressions and a finer surface texture. The result is an engine area that looks three-dimensional on the finished model rather than like suggested relief.

Use

  • Wash the castings with warm soapy water and let them dry thoroughly: this removes the mold release agent.
  • Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc and level the surface with abrasive paper.
  • Remove the corresponding plastic parts from the kit and clean out the opening or the seating surface completely.
  • Bond with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), ideally after a short dry fit.
  • Spray primer, then the base shade; a fine wash will bring out the ribbing and the depressions.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Wessex HC.2 in 1:72 scale who are bothered by the simplified engine area.
  • Modelers who want the detail without laborious scraping and scratch-building.
  • Competition modelers, where the fidelity of technical details is judged.

Working with resin: sand wet or with a respirator, and do not inhale resin dust. Apply cyanoacrylate glue in a ventilated room and protect your eyes and skin.

FAQ

No. The set covers the parts of the engine cooling system that are visible from the outside. It is neither a complete engine nor a helicopter model.

Yes, expect to remove the corresponding plastic parts and to sand the seating surface. The work is easy but calls for a sharp knife and a calm hand.

Yes, provided they already have experience of a sharp knife and cyanoacrylate glue. Resin is more brittle than plastic and takes neither snapping nor prying.
