The package combines a wooden veneer deck with the laying of the planks printed on it and a self-adhesive back, a masking template and photo-etched parts. It is neither a ship model nor a substitute for one, but an accessory obtained alongside a kit that has already been bought. The shapes are cut to the Revell 05099 kit and usually will not fit other boxings of the same ship.
The most demanding part of the work is not the large areas but the places where the deck goes around the bases of the turrets, the crane pedestals, the hatches and the feet of the superstructures. It pays to build so that the deck is laid before the superstructures come in turn, otherwise the veneer will hardly get underneath them. Where an overhang is left all the same, trim it with a new scalpel with a fresh blade. A blunt knife does not cut wood but tears it and the grain frays. Cut with several light strokes rather than one forceful one, and lead the blade along the edge of the plastic as along a rule.
Once it is laid, the cuts tend to be a shade lighter than their surroundings. You will level them out with a weak stain or heavily thinned oil paint applied over the whole area. The gaps between the planks then only need going over with a very thin dark wash and the excess pulling away. It can be sealed with a thin coat of matte clear. The resulting deck has an irregular wood grain that you will not achieve on an engraved plastic area with even the best painting.
This is not a kit. The base model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
