About product

Fujimi photo-etched parts for the aircraft carrier Kaiyo, 1:700

A set of photo-etched metal parts from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi in 1:700 scale, prepared for a model of the escort carrier Kaiyo. The photo-etched parts replace features that cannot be molded from plastic in a realistic thickness - railings, ladders, gratings and similar fine structures. It is not a model of the ship but an upgrade accessory for a kit already bought.

The real subject

The Kaiyo was a Japanese escort carrier converted from a civilian ocean liner. She entered service in 1943 and her career played out above all in Japanese waters - she served for training deck crews and for ferrying aircraft, not for offensive operations at the head of a force. Toward the end of the war she was heavily damaged by air attacks. Thanks to her origin in a civilian hull her silhouette is unmistakable among Japanese carriers, and among modelers she is one of the less usual subjects.

Building and painting tips

Separate the photo-etched parts with a scalpel or special nippers on a hard support, not by twisting - the metal cracks at the break and the edge stays ragged. Make the folds with a bending tool or between two blades, so that the lines are straight. It is glued with super glue applied in a minimal amount; with railings, a thin glue applied on the tip of a fine wire helps. Paint holds badly on bare metal, so always apply a primer. Railings are easier to paint while still on the fret. Once they are glued on, it is enough to unify the shade of the deck and the superstructure and to bring the texture out with a fine wash.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Japanese ships in 1:700 scale who want to lift a model above the contents of the box
  • More experienced modelers used to working with photo-etched metal and super glue
  • Those who display a model at close range and care about the fineness of the structures
  • Collectors of less usual Japanese carriers

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of photo-etched metal parts which are added to a plastic kit of the ship Kaiyo in 1:700 scale that has already been bought.

Photo-etched sets of this type usually bring the fine structures that cannot be molded from plastic - railings, ladders and gratings. Check the particular list of parts on the packaging.

With super glue applied in a minimal amount. A primer has to be applied to metal before painting, or the paint will not hold.

Working with photo-etched metal calls for a steady hand, a scalpel and ideally a bending tool. For a very first model it is not the ideal choice.
