A plastic kit of a modern warship in 1:700 scale. The real subject is the British Type 23 frigate, specifically the unit Monmouth with the pennant number F235. The 1:700 scale is the most widespread in warship collecting, so the model fits well into a collection beside vessels of other navies and still takes up little room.
The Type 23, known also as the Duke class, is a series of multi-purpose frigates of the Royal Navy designed above all for anti-submarine warfare. What is characteristic is the effort to keep the ship's own noise low and to limit its radar signature, which is matched by the sloped surfaces of the superstructures and the clean outlines of the hull. At the bow the ship carries a gun turret, amidships there is space for vertically launched anti-aircraft missiles, and at the stern a hangar and a landing area for a shipboard helicopter. The equipment includes a towed array sonar. These ships have formed the backbone of the surface forces of the Royal Navy for many years now and are going through modernizations one after another, so their appearance changes over time.
In 1:700 scale clean work is what decides: sand the parting lines on the hull down before the superstructures are glued on, and cut the small parts off the sprue with a sharp scalpel rather than with nippers. The gray paint of modern ships is unremarkable, so a light shading of the panels and a fine wash into the engraved lines pay off, so that the model does not look flat. Leave the landing area at the stern and its markings until last, and apply the decals on a gloss base. Railings in this scale are mostly replaced with photo-etched parts, which can be bought separately and visibly lift the model.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
