An accessory to a ship kit, not a model. A thin wooden veneer carries the printed grain of the deck planking and a self-adhesive layer on the back. It is stuck over the plastic deck of a finished hull and replaces painted planks. The set is cut for the Aoshima 045084 kit. Several deck sets relate to the same ship for different kits and different states of the ship, so the target kit has to be watched.
The Nagato was a Japanese battleship of the class of the same name, brought into service at the beginning of the 1920s and modernized several times during her service. She belonged to the units with a long open deck, so the wooden areas make up a large part of the visible surface of a model.
Veneer can be given a surface finish, but the rules are different from plastic. A stain or a very thinned oil paint penetrates into the wood and you will not get the shade out of it again, so always test on an offcut first. If you only want to even the deck out and protect it, a thin coat of matte varnish applied in several light passes is enough; one heavy coat saturates the wood and the grain of the planks goes gray. Use water-based products sparingly, as veneer reacts to them by buckling. Do the weathering between the planks only after the surface has been sealed, otherwise the pigment soaks in unevenly and cannot be taken back.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model. The kit, glue, paints, stain and varnish are not included in the package.
