The package brings together three accessories for one kit of the battleship Yamato in 1:700 scale. It contains a veneer deck with a self-adhesive backing, a masking sheet and photo-etched parts. The set is cut for the Tamiya 31113 kit, so check before buying that you have exactly that version. Neither the model itself nor paints are part of it.
An injection-molded deck has the laying of the planks suggested only by an engraved line and in 1:700 scale it is barely visible once sprayed. A veneer part has the pattern of the planks printed directly into the wooden surface, so a real texture arises along with fine differences in the tone of the individual planks. It is precisely these that make a deck believable in a photograph, because they play the light differently from evenly sprayed plastic.
Work in sections. First rid the plastic deck of flash and burrs, sand it flat and degrease it with alcohol, because a self-adhesive layer holds badly on a greasy surface. Peel the protective film off the back step by step, not all at once, and lay the veneer from the center of the deck toward the edges so that no crease forms anywhere. Lay it on dry and check the fit of the openings for the superstructures before you press it down. Trim any remaining overhangs with a new, truly sharp blade, as a blunt knife tears veneer. It is advisable to go over the surface at the end with a matte or satin clear coat, which evens out the wood and protects it.
