This is not a kit but an accessory to one. The set holds a thin wooden veneer cut to the outline of the deck areas of an Italian battleship in 1:700 scale, with the printed laying of the planks and with a self-adhesive layer on the back. The veneer is laid directly onto the plastic deck of the model. On battleships the deck is the largest unbroken area the viewer sees, so swapping engraved plastic for real wood is the most striking change to the look of a model that can be made with one accessory. The set is designed for the Trumpeter 05779 kit.
The Vittorio Veneto belonged to the Italian class of modern battleships designed in the 1930s. The ship carried her main armament in three triple 381 mm turrets and was marked by a high design speed and a distinctive system of underwater protection for the hull. She entered service in 1940, which is the state this deck relates to; Italian battleships of the time operated above all in the Mediterranean. Modelers appreciate their slender silhouette and the extensive open decks, which a wooden finish really brings out.
Self-adhesive veneer forgives little, so prepare the surface first: parting lines sanded, seams filled, the area wiped with alcohol and dry. Try the part dry, align it by the axis of the hull and uncover the film on the back only in sections. Work with a soft cloth and pressure in one direction, so that no air is trapped under the veneer. Around the turrets and the superstructures, trim the overlap with a new blade guided flat along the plastic edge. Painting is not necessary, as the veneer has a shade of its own; if you want to shift it, use a thin glaze and let it dry well. A dark wash will bring out the gaps, and a final matte varnish will seal the wood.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
