The package holds a veneer cut-out of the deck with a printed plank pattern and a self-adhesive back. It is an aftermarket accessory meant to be laid on the plastic deck of a model of the auxiliary ship in 1:700 scale, not a kit. The veneer is cut for the Aoshima 009758 kit.
Auxiliary vessels have decks broken up by cargo spaces, cranes and working areas, so the veneer cut-out tends to be split into a larger number of smaller pieces. With those it pays to set the workplace up first: a light-colored mat on which a tiny piece will not get lost, flat-jawed tweezers and a box set aside for segments that come later. Thin veneer picks up a static charge and attracts dust, so blow the area clean before gluing and do not work in a dusty place. Pick each piece up by the edge, never by the adhesive back; a fingerprint on the back cannot be removed again.
Kunikawa Maru was a Japanese auxiliary ship serving as a seaplane tender, converted from a merchant vessel. Ships of this category handled, replenished and maintained floatplanes in areas without land bases, and they therefore had extensive working decks and cranes.
The smaller deck areas take a somewhat stronger patina than the smooth deck of a battleship. A light wash in the seams and discreet stains match the working life of such a ship.
An accessory for a model. The ship kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
