This plastic kit from the Japanese manufacturer Aoshima captures the modern destroyer Ashigara of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, equipped with the Aegis combat system. The 1:700 scale has long been the standard for ship models, so a finished model sits well in a display case beside further vessels from other ranges and from other manufacturers.
The Ashigara is the second unit of the Atago class, that is, of the large guided-missile destroyers that the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force brought into service after 2000. Typical of this class is the bulky block superstructure with the flat antennas of the Aegis radar, vertical launch cells in the forward and the after part of the deck, and at the stern a landing deck together with an enclosed hangar for a helicopter, which the older units of the preceding class did not have. The gun armament is concentrated on the forward deck, and the rest of the space is taken up by sensors, communication antennas and boats.
With ships in 1:700 the cleanliness of the work with small parts decides everything. Go through the sprues in advance and separate the fragile parts with a sharp scalpel, not with nippers. Fit the hull together, sand the joint and spray the whole model with a uniform primer, and only then paint the decks. Check in the instructions whether you are building a full hull or the waterline variant; choose a stand or a base imitating the water surface accordingly. Fine photo-etched parts such as railings and radar meshes lift a model markedly, but they are bought separately.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
