About product

A wooden deck and photo-etched parts 1:700 for the light cruiser Chungking

The package from Artwox Model brings together a self-adhesive deck of wood veneer with the laying of the planks printed on it, a masking template and photo-etched parts. It is an aftermarket accessory bought alongside a plastic kit that has already been obtained. The shapes are cut to one particular release of the model, named with this product, so check before buying that this is the one you are building.

Photo-etched parts and the deck: the order matters

The most common mistake with sets like this is to fit the photo-etched parts before the deck. Railings, ladders and grating then get in the way, the veneer will not get under them and it breaks while being pressed in. The right order is to join and sand the hull, lay the deck, let it rest and only then glue the photo-etched parts. Railings are fitted last, because one inevitably catches them during further work. Fold the photo-etched parts in a bending tool or between two blades, not in your fingers, otherwise the fold will not be crisp.

Gluing photo-etched parts onto wood

Photo-etched parts stick to veneer less well than to plastic, because wood soaks the glue up. Use a thicker super glue in a really small drop applied with a pin, ideally into a hole drilled in advance, or fit the photo-etched parts onto plastic surfaces where that is possible. Any excess cyanoacrylate leaves a white haze on light wood that can then be removed only with great difficulty. The rest of the finishing is the usual: a wash into the gaps and a thin coat of matte clear.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers with experience of photo-etched parts
  • Builders of smaller surface ships in 1:700 scale
  • Those who want the deck, the masks and the photo-etched parts in one package
  • Collectors who are finishing a model for a display case

This is not a kit. The base model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The deck first. Fitted railings and ladders get in the way of laying the veneer and the thin deck breaks under them.

A thicker super glue in a minimal drop applied with a pin. Any excess leaves a white haze on light veneer.

In a bending tool, or between two blades or metal rules. A fold made with the fingers comes out rounded and in this scale that shows at once.

Rather not. The combination of small veneer and photo-etched parts calls for tweezers, a steady hand and experience with super glue.
