A wooden deck for a model of the American escort carrier USS Bogue (CVE-9) in 1:700 scale. It replaces the smooth plastic part with the fine grain of a planked floor.

The USS Bogue (CVE-9) was the first unit of a numerous class of American escort carriers of the Second World War. She came about by converting the hull of a cargo ship and her task was not great battles but escorting convoys and hunting submarines in the Atlantic. The flight decks of the ships of that time were laid from planks, so a wooden part matches the subject not only in its grain but also in its material.
A wooden deck for a model in 1:700 scale: a thin veneer cut to the outline of the deck, with a fine rendering of the gaps between the individual planks. A plastic part never has a rendering this small as sharp in this scale, and the wood also carries a grain of its own, so the deck looks alive even without laborious painting and shading.
Lay the part down dry first and compare the outline with the deck of the model, so that you know where it will need tuning. Fit the superstructures, the elevators and the railings only once the deck is holding in place, otherwise the veneer will not get under them. The way it is attached is described in the manufacturer's instructions; if the deck has no adhesive layer of its own, apply the glue in a thin continuous coat, so that the wood does not buckle. A gloss varnish does not suit wood; a matte overcoat merely unifies the shade and protects the surface.
The set suits a modeler who wants the most prominent area of the whole model finished without painting hundreds of gaps. The work is quick, but it takes patience when fitting the outline. Unless stated otherwise, the model, paints and glue are not part of the delivery.
