An injection-molded plastic kit of the American large cruiser USS Guam in 1:700 scale from Trumpeter. Even at this space-saving ship scale it is a sizeable model; the finished hull is over thirty centimeters long, so it pays to prepare a display case or a stand with plenty of room. The build takes in a great many small superstructures, gun turrets and anti-aircraft positions.
USS Guam was the second unit of the Alaska class, the ships the US Navy listed as large cruisers. They came about as an answer to fast enemy cruisers and as escorts for carrier task forces, but in size and armament they came close to smaller battleships. The main armament was nine 305 mm guns in three triple turrets, backed by a dual-purpose and anti-aircraft battery. Guam entered service in 1944 and in the closing stages of the war operated in the Pacific with the fast carrier task forces and in the bombardment of shore targets. Postwar service was short; for their size these ships were expensive to run and quickly ended up in reserve.
Decide at the very start whether you want the model waterline or the whole hull on a stand, because the preparation of the base and the painting of the underwater section both follow from that. Paint the decks and the superstructures separately before the final assembly, as that way you reach the covered places too. Glue the small guns, cranes and searchlights on with cyanoacrylate glue once they are already painted. Aftermarket photo-etched railings, ladders and finer radars lift the model considerably, as the plastic parts at this scale are coarse by comparison. To finish, a dark wash into the deck lines, a light edge highlight and a glaze to bring out the wooden deck all help.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
