About product

A masking set for the Mitsubishi A5M2b Claude in 1:72 scale

Die-cut self-adhesive Montex masks for a model of the Japanese carrier-based fighter Mitsubishi A5M2b, designated by the Allies with the code Claude, in 1:72 scale. The templates make it easier to spray the glazing and the wheels - the areas that decide the cleanliness of the whole model in a small scale. You simply transfer the mask, press the edges down and spray; once it is off, a sharp dividing line remains. The set is prepared to fit a particular kit, so check compatibility with another one beforehand.

The real subject

The Mitsubishi A5M went down in history as the first monoplane carrier-based fighter taken into regular service. A fixed undercarriage in aerodynamic fairings, an open cockpit and excellent handling characterized a machine which at the end of the 1930s made up the backbone of Japanese naval aviation and proved itself in combat over China. The A5M2b version was given a more powerful engine; some of the machines also tried an enclosed canopy, which, however, did not catch on with the pilots. The design experience from the A5M prepared the ground directly for the famous A6M Zero. The small dimensions of the model in 1:72 make precise masks practically a necessity.

Application tips

Degrease the surface, transfer the masks with tweezers and burnish the edges down thoroughly. With the small pieces, plan the work out - stick them on gradually and check the seating against the engraved lines. Spray light layers and take the masks off slowly at a sharp angle before the paint has fully cured.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Japanese naval aviation of the 1930s.
  • Modelers who want clean lines even in the small 1:72 scale.
  • Users of an airbrush and of a brush alike.
  • Anyone interested in the predecessor of the famous Zero.

This is a masking accessory - the kit of the aircraft is not included in the package.

FAQ

No, this is a masking accessory. The model of the A5M2b has to be obtained separately; the masks are cut for a particular kit.

Yes. Even an open cockpit has a windshield with framing, and a clean spray finish on the wheels in 1:72 is difficult without templates - masks make both markedly easier.

Use tweezers and a toothpick, stick them on gradually piece by piece and press every edge down. Haste is the greatest enemy in a small scale.
