Resin replacement exhausts for the model of the American fighter Bell P-400 Airacobra in 1:72 scale from the Quickboost range, the accessory brand of the Czech firm Aires. It is not an aircraft kit but a stand-alone detail accessory: the parts from the base kit are cut off and replaced with more accurate castings with a crisper shape and an open outlet.
The P-400 designation was carried by the export version of the Bell P-39 Airacobra fighter. The Airacobra was unusual among the fighters of its day in the layout of its powerplant: the V engine sat behind the pilot, in the middle of the fuselage, and drove the propeller through a long shaft running under the cockpit floor. That left room in the nose for the nosewheel landing gear and the gun armament, but it also meant that the exhaust stubs came out of the sides of the fuselage at roughly half its length, that is right in the line of sight of a model. That is exactly why their execution shows so much on a model and why it pays to replace them.
First wash the resin castings in lukewarm soapy water to remove the mold release residue from the surface, otherwise paint will not hold. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw or a cutting disc, and never break it off. Sand wet and with respiratory protection, as resin dust must not be breathed in. It is bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate); for more time to line the position up, use a slower type or a gel. In color terms the exhausts are built up from a dark base through rust shades and heat discoloration, and the outlet is darkened with graphite or pigment. Spray the smoke stain behind the exhausts with heavily thinned paint in thin coats, and always running aft.
The accessory is supplied unpainted, as a resin casting. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
