A sheet set of water-slide decals in 1:72 scale from Print Scale. The sheet is devoted to the American four-engine heavy bomber Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. It is not a model and not a kit: the decals go onto an already built and painted model. On a type with such an extensive and varied operational history, sheets like this give a modeler the chance to build a particular aircraft outside the usual range of kits.
The Boeing B-17 was an American four-engine heavy bomber introduced even before the United States entered the Second World War. Characteristic of it were the defensive armament spread over the whole fuselage, which earned it the nickname Flying Fortress, and the ability to take considerable damage to the structure and still make it back. The aircraft was designed for daylight bombing from high altitude in large formations, which placed high demands on navigation and on working together. During the war it went through a series of production versions that differed above all in defensive armament, the shape of the nose and the equipment. Besides bombing duties, aircraft of the type were also used for reconnaissance, for search and rescue and as carriers of special equipment.
A large four-engine model has extensive smooth surfaces where every mistake shows clearly, so overcoat the surface carefully with a gloss varnish before the decals. Cut the motif out close to the edge of the printing, dip it in lukewarm water for a few seconds and let it rest until the film starts to slide. Slide it onto the moistened surface, set it with a soft brush and blot the water with a towel from the center toward the edges. On large motifs on the sides of the fuselage it helps to work in sections and to keep checking that no bubbles are forming. A decal softener will settle the decal over panel lines and riveting. Once dry, even the whole model out with a matte or semi-matte varnish, depending on whether you are building an aircraft with a painted finish or in polished metal.
