About product

A British officer's tent 1:72 for a diorama

An accessory of the Metallic Details brand for building dioramas in 1:72 scale. It represents a small square tent of the British Army with a footprint of roughly six by six feet, of the kind that served as accommodation for one man or as an improvised workplace for a commander. It is not a model of equipment and not a figure — it is a standalone scenic element which will complete a field camp, an airfield apron or the rear area behind the front. Converted to scale this is an object roughly two and a half centimeters wide, so it fits even into a small display-case scene.

What the tent does in a scene

Dioramas with equipment often suffer from the vehicle or the aircraft standing on an empty surface with no sense of scale or context. The tent deals with this problem most simply of all accessories: it gives the scene a human dimension, explains that this is a camp or a field position, and naturally creates a second level of height for the viewer's eye to lean on. At the same time it holds in 1:72 scale that canvas with regular folds and a slightly sagging roof is legible even from a distance, so it makes sense to devote care above all to painting it.

Preparation and painting tips

Wash the accessory in lukewarm water with dish soap before painting and check whether any remains of casting blocks or mold release agent are left on it; with cast parts that is usual. Build the base in a lighter canvas shade, because canvas fades quickly in the sun. You will draw the volume of the folds out with a dark glazing wash that runs into the recesses, and with a dry brush in a light tone along the edges. Dust the lower hem with pigment in the color of the surrounding soil, so that the tent grows out of the ground and does not look as if it had been laid on. You can add the pegs and guy lines yourself from stretched sprue or from the thinnest thread painted over — it is precisely those that give the scene the greatest credibility. Glue the tent to the base with superglue or with a white glue for modeling materials.

Who the accessory is for

  • builders of dioramas and vignettes in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who want to set equipment into a field camp
  • anyone interested in British subjects of the Second World War and later years
  • everyone looking for a quick way to give a scene a sense of scale

The accessory is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue, figures and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not; it is sold separately as an accessory for a diorama. The package holds no equipment, figures or base.

According to the name the subject has a footprint of roughly six by six feet, which in 1:72 scale corresponds to an object about two and a half centimeters wide.

Start with a lighter canvas shade, draw the folds out with a dark wash and go over the edges with a dry brush. Dust the lower hem with pigment in the color of the terrain.

You do not, but it will help the scene markedly. The simplest way is to use the thinnest thread or stretched sprue and paint it over.
