About product

DH.82a Tiger Moth exhaust 1:72 (Quickboost)

This is a detail accessory of cast resin, not a kit of an aircraft. The content is a replacement exhaust pipe for a model of the de Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth in 1:72. On this aircraft the exhaust runs along the side of the fuselage behind the engine, so it is markedly visible when you look at a model. Injected plastic usually has the mouth blanked off, whereas the casting of the Quickboost range has the outlet open and a surface with no mold seam.

The real subject

The de Havilland DH.82 Tiger Moth is a British biplane trainer of the 1930s with an inverted inline engine, that is an engine mounted with the cylinders downward. This arrangement gives the aircraft its characteristic slender nose and at the same time decides where the exhaust pipe runs: along the side of the fuselage and aft, clear of the cockpit area. On machines in service the exhaust tends to be markedly heat-discolored and sooted, which is a rewarding subject for weathering.

Usage tips

Wash the casting in lukewarm water with detergent and remove any release agent. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw and level the surface by sanding wet with your airways protected. It is glued with super glue in a small amount. Remove the original plastic exhaust and clean up the side of the fuselage. Painting is what pays off most here: start with a dark iron shade, add a touch of rust and brown ocher, go over it with a fine dark wash and at the end pick the edges out lightly with a dry brush. Around the mouth and behind the exhaust add a thin sooty haze that shows the direction of the airflow.

Who the part is for

  • Builders of a Tiger Moth model in 1:72.
  • Modelers bothered by the blanked-off mouth of a plastic exhaust.
  • Anyone looking for a quick improvement with no intervention in the structure.
  • Lovers of weathering and heat effects on metal parts.

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. This is a separate replacement part for the plastic model of the Tiger Moth in 1:72.

It has an open exhaust mouth and no mold seam, which with injected plastic has to be laboriously sanded away.

A dark iron base, a touch of rust and brown ocher, a dark wash and at the end a light dry brush on the edges with a sooty haze behind the mouth.

It is enough to remove the original plastic exhaust and clean up the side of the fuselage. The structure is not touched.
