The McDonnell F-101 grew out of the unrealized XF-88 escort fighter and reached the US Air Force in 1957. A pair of engines with afterburning made it one of the fastest machines of its day, but its high-set horizontal tail surface earned it the reputation of an aircraft that does not forgive violent maneuvers. The single-seat A and C versions carried tactical armament over Europe, and the reconnaissance RF-101 then brought back photographs from patrol flights over the Caribbean in the autumn of 1962.
The package consists of thin self-adhesive film with precisely cut parts for the canopy frames, the windscreen and the smaller glazed areas. The patterns match the shapes of the parts from the 1:72 Valom kits, so they are applied without trying and without trimming with a knife. The cuts respect the domed shape of the canopy, so the parts fit even where a straight strip of tape would ripple.
First rid the glazing of grease and fingerprints, otherwise the film will not seat over the whole area. Lift the mask off the backing with tweezers, lay it on dry and apply pressure from the middle toward the edges. Press the edges with a toothpick so that paint cannot get under them. Spray in thin coats and remove the mask while the finish is only touch-dry; the edge of the frame then stays sharp. If it is laid on wrongly the film can be repositioned once or twice, but the tack drops as a result.
Lining the frames by hand with a brush takes hours and the result tends to be uneven. This set shortens that work to a few minutes and suits a beginner just as well as a builder who wants the cockpit finished before starting on the camouflage. The model of the aircraft and paints are not part of the package.
