A printed resin accessory from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a model of the Grumman F4F in 1:72 scale. What it holds is a ventral jettisonable tank of 42 gallons, the piece of stores this carrier-based fighter carried to extend its range and jettisoned before combat. It is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory part for a base kit.
A tank printed in one piece has no lengthwise parting seam to be filled and sanded down. On smooth bodies of revolution in particular, removing that seam is the most tedious part of the work, because the surface around it always gets sanded away with it. The part is cut off the print supports with a sharp knife, the mating face is leveled and the tank is glued on with cyanoacrylate. Check in advance whether your kit has a matching attachment on the fuselage; now and then you have to add a pin of your own made of wire, so that the part sits exactly on the centerline.
The part is in the color of the printing resin and nothing on it is pre-painted. The cleanest result comes from spraying it off the model: mount the tank on a wire and spray it with the primer and the top shade in the same order and from the same mixed batch of paint as the underside of the fuselage. With drop tanks in particular a different tone gives itself away at once, because the part hangs directly below a sprayed area and the eye compares the two colors side by side. Unify the sheen in the same way; a tank varnished on its own tends to be glossier than the rest of the airframe. It is fitted to the model only after the decals and the final varnish, when nothing on the fuselage is being masked any more.
This is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
