Kit of the Grumman HU-16 Albatross amphibian rescue aircraft in 1:72 scale, in the B and D renditions.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Grumman HU-16 Albatross is a twin-engine amphibian aircraft built around a boat-shaped hull. It lands on water as well as on a paved runway, because it has a retractable landing gear, and it carries auxiliary floats at the wingtips that keep it balanced on the surface. Two radial piston engines drive it. It served above all for search and rescue, that is for picking up the crews of aircraft that had come down and survivors from the sea; in this role it was operated by a number of other countries besides the American air arms. The original SA-16 designation was changed to HU-16 in 1962.
A model in 1:72 scale with a span to match the large boat hull, so the finished piece takes up a noticeable amount of room on the shelf. The name gives the B and D renditions. Which of them and in what finish can be built according to the instructions depends on the contents of the particular package.
Glue the split fuselage in sections and sand the joint along the keel patiently, because that is where the seam shows most on the finished model, even after spraying. Fit the cockpit glazing and the side windows after spraying and mask the frames beforehand. Before you glue the landing gear bays, decide whether the model will stand on its gear or float with the gear retracted. Wash and degrease the surface before painting and keep the transition between the color of the underside and the upper surfaces soft.
For modelers drawn to less usual types away from the run of fighters and bombers, and for collectors of rescue and coastal hardware. Paints, glue and filler are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
