1:72 decals for the Hawker Hurricane Mk.I of the Polish fighter squadrons of the Royal Air Force. The first part of the series captures the period of the Battle of Britain.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Hawker Hurricane Mk.I was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and carried eight machine guns of 7.7 mm caliber in its wings. Its forward section rested on a welded tubular frame covered with fabric, which made it an immensely tough opponent: a ground crew repaired a shot-through fuselage in a single night, whereas a damaged all-metal airframe went to the workshop for a long stay.
The first two independent Polish fighter units in the Royal Air Force, No. 302 and No. 303, were formed during the summer of 1940, and both sat down in Hurricanes. The pilots arrived with combat experience from the campaign at home and from France, and their machines were soon marked by a range of personal details, from painted emblems below the cockpit to individually arranged codes.
The first part of the Polish series concentrates on the time of the battle and on the months that followed it. Besides the national roundels and the code letters it also allows for the small lettering typical of the early examples. The camouflage pattern on these aircraft is very broken up, and the dividing line between the dark green and the brown falls exactly where the fuselage code is placed. So finish the paintwork and the gloss intermediate coat before you reach for the sheet. Soak the insignia in lukewarm water, transfer it to a moistened spot and dab it down with a brush; blot the remaining water away with a tissue and leave it undisturbed to dry for a whole day.
The subject was rich enough that it would not fit onto a single sheet. This release sticks to the earlier period, when the machines still carried the original combination of upper shades and a light underside, which changed in the following months.
