This is a vacuum-formed (vacuform) transparent canopy for building the Heinkel He 162 Spatz fighter in 1:72 scale. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory that replaces the injection-molded canopy from the Special Hobby kit. The thin, clear formed film has markedly finer framing and better optics than the plastic part in the basic kit and makes it possible to display the cockpit open.
The Heinkel He 162 (nicknamed the Volksjäger or Spatz) was a German single-engine jet fighter of the very close of the Second World War. It was created in an extremely short time, made wide use of wood and simple construction, and carried the BMW 003 engine unusually above the fuselage. The lightened glazed cockpit is one of its recognition features.
Vacuform parts are carefully scribed around with a sharp knife, separated from the backing film and their edges sanded to the exact shape with fine paper. A brief dip in a gloss clear coat helps toward maximum clarity. They are glued with PVA or with a special cement for canopies that does not cloud plastic. The framing is masked with tape and sprayed from inside and outside alike.
It is supplied as a separate accessory. The basic aircraft kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
