The Ilyushin Il-2 was a Soviet ground-attack aircraft of the Second World War and is among the most heavily produced aircraft of all time. Its distinguishing feature was an armored fuselage into which the engine and the pilot's position were built, so that the armor was not an addition but a load-bearing part of the structure. It was powered by a liquid-cooled V12 engine. The armament consisted of cannon and machine guns in the wing, supplemented by bombs and unguided rockets for attacks on ground targets.
It is an unassembled kit for a model in 1:72 scale. The range of parts, the choice of color variants and the contents of the decal sheet are given in the instructions enclosed by the manufacturer.
Dry-fit the parts first, above all the join of the fuselage to the wing and the seating of the canopy. It is good to finish the cockpit before the fuselage is closed up. Apply the decals on a smooth gloss surface and, once they are dry, go over them with a matte clear coat. A ground-attack aircraft will take more pronounced dirt on the lower surfaces and scuffing on the leading edges; it helps to bring out the shape.
The kit suits a collection of Eastern Front aircraft and also stands as a model with a strong story of its own. Paints, glue and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
