A resin replacement for the exhausts of a plastic kit of the Lavochkin La-5 in 1:72 scale. Quickboost is an accessory line from Aires aimed at simple replacement parts that are fitted without major intervention in the model. Exhausts cast in resin have a cleaner shape than injection-molded plastic, and in a small scale they tend to be done with a hinted opening, a detail that practically cannot be molded in plastic. The set is not a model of an aircraft.
The Lavochkin La-5 was a Soviet single-seat fighter with a radial engine, which came about by rebuilding an earlier type with an inline engine. It was precisely the change of powerplant that altered the shape of the forward fuselage and the layout of the exhausts, which on a radial engine come out at the sides of the cowling. On a model these are areas clearly visible on both sides of the fuselage and they catch the eye at once, because there is usually pronounced sooting around them.
Wash the castings in warm water with detergent and remove release agent residue. Cut the casting blocks off with a sharp scalpel or a fine saw; with parts in 1:72 scale work over a tray with a raised edge, so that a small casting is not lost. They are glued with cyanoacrylate, applied with a pin in a minimal amount. If the kit contains its own exhausts, they are usually cut away and the place cleaned up. Painting: a dark base with a hint of rust, a dry brush with a metal color on the edges and finally sooting toward the rear with thin glazes or dust pigments. Glue the exhausts on only after the cowling has been painted; the transition is then easier to clean up.
