About product

Lanchester, a British armored car in 1:72 scale

The kit captures the British heavy armored car Lanchester in 1:72 scale from the Zebranomodel range. It is a kit meant to be assembled and painted, not a finished display piece. The number of parts, the material of the frames and the marking options are given in the instructions with the kit — on small production runs, resin parts turn up alongside injection-molded plastic, so count on that while building.

The real subject

The Lanchester was a British armored car of interwar design with a 6x4 chassis, that is with three axles and drive on the rear two. The body was fully armored, with a traversing turret above the crew compartment and a long hood, which gave the car an unmistakable silhouette. The car arose at a time when the British army was trying to replace the improvised armored cars of the First World War with a standardized type. By the second half of the 1930s it was already giving way to newer and lighter designs, but part of the fleet stayed in the armament of units outside Europe and served out its life in the early 1940s.

Building and painting tips

Against a tank the vehicle has a large area of flat panels, so it pays to spend time sanding the seams on the body — every seam left untreated shows once painted. Sand riveted detail only carefully, so as not to wipe it away; when a rivet is damaged, it can be replaced with a drop of glue or a thin plastic profile. Fit the wheels only after painting, as the tires are easier to mask. Lay a thin base under the paint, otherwise every fingerprint will show on the smooth surfaces. Interwar British schemes tend to be single-color, so the result depends on modulation: a lighter spray on the upper surfaces, a darker wash in the seams and a light dry brush on the edges. Apply the dusty weathering from below upward and let it tell above all on the fenders and in the wheel arches.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of interwar and early British armored vehicles
  • modelers building vehicles in 1:72 scale for a display case
  • builders of dioramas with a colonial or interwar theme
  • anyone interested in less usual types outside the mainstream of kits

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The scale is 1:72, which is the ordinary standard for collectors' display cases of vehicles and for smaller dioramas alike.

The material of the parts is given in the instructions with the kit. On small production runs, resin parts may turn up alongside injection-molded plastic, and you will recognize them by the look of the frames.

The number of parts is given in the instructions with the kit.

It is more suitable for a modeler with at least basic experience. Kits from smaller manufacturers usually call for more cleaning up of the parts and for dry fitting.
