New Ware 1:72 mask set — Tu-22M3 Backfire C, the BASIC form

Self-adhesive, machine-cut masks for the model of the Tupolev Tu-22M3 bomber with a variable-geometry wing, 1:72 scale, the entry step of the range. The set serves to cover the areas that are to stay free of paint during spraying. It is neither a model nor a part of one.

Broken-up glazing and wheels

The cockpit of the Tu-22M3 has divided glazing with a great many short frames and straight edges. A shape like that is masked badly by hand: every strip of tape has to be measured, cut and laid on separately, and the slightest deviation is enough for the frames not to be of equal width. A pre-cut mask solves this problem once and for all. The second typical task is the wheels — the boundary between the rim and the rubber is never hit accurately all the way round freehand, and a transition sprayed through a mask is noticeably cleaner than running it round with a brush.

Keeping the paint from running under

• Press the mask down properly once it is applied, above all where it passes over the edge of a part.
• Spray the first coat rather dry and only lightly, and cover fully only with the second.
• Lead the airbrush perpendicular to the mask, not at an angle in under its edge.
• Remove it slowly and at an angle backwards; if the mask resists, warm it for a while with a hairdryer on a low setting.
