Waterslide decals in 1:72 scale from the British manufacturer Xtradecal, devoted to the British versions of the Phantom FG.1 and FGR.2. The name designates it as the fourth part of a series of sheets for this type. What exactly this part contains cannot be read off the name: what decides is what the manufacturer gives on the packaging and the instructions inside, so look at them before buying and compare them with the earlier parts of the series if you already have them.
FG.1 and FGR.2 are the British versions of the two-seat twin-engined Phantom fighter. They differ from the American machines in their powerplant: Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans called for a wider rear fuselage and modified air intakes. The FG.1 came out of a naval order, while the FGR.2 was the multirole variant for the Royal Air Force. The type went through a long service during which both the finishes and the unit markings changed markedly, which is the reason a whole series of decal sheets exists for it.
With sheets from a longer production series it pays to pay attention to the age of the printing. Decals that have lain a long time may have the adhesive hardened and the film more brittle, which shows in the decal falling apart in the water or, the other way round, not releasing at all. Before you set to work on the ones you care about, try one unimportant piece from the edge of the sheet. If the film crumbles, go over the whole sheet with a thin coat of clear varnish from a spray, let it cure and cut the decals out only afterwards; the varnish strengthens the film and holds it together. Slow soaking is solved by a drop of a surface tension reducing agent in the water.
A decal sheet is not a kit. The model, paints, varnish and glue are not included in the package.
