About product

Bell P-39 D/F/K Airacobra 1:72 — an RS Models plastic kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the American fighter Bell P-39 Airacobra in the early D, F and K versions, in 1:72 scale from the Czech manufacturer RS Models. It is a short-run kit with finely engraved detail but higher demands on the build — the parts need more careful cleaning up and fitting, so we recommend it rather to more advanced modelers. The exact contents of the package and the marking schemes are given in the enclosed instructions.

The real subject

The P-39 Airacobra was an unusual American fighter with the engine mounted behind the pilot, in the middle of the fuselage, and with a nose cannon firing along the axis of the propeller shaft. It had a nose wheel landing gear, which was uncommon at the time it appeared. The early D, F and K versions came out at the start of the Second World War; American and Allied units fielded them in the Pacific and over North Africa. The Airacobra had its most successful career, however, with the Soviet Air Force under Lend-Lease deliveries, where it excelled in combat at low and medium altitudes.

Building and painting tips

With a short-run kit, expect careful cleaning up of the parts and a trial dry fit before gluing. Paint the cockpit before closing the fuselage. Apply a primer to the plastic, which will at the same time show up any gaps that need touching in. Early P-39s usually wore an olive green upper surface and a gray underside, while Soviet machines tended to be more varied. Pick out the engraved detail with a wash, lay the decals on a gloss varnish and then flatten the surface.

Who the model is for

  • For more advanced modelers who do not mind the more demanding build of a short-run kit.
  • For fans of unusual designs and of fighters with the engine in the middle of the fuselage.
  • For collectors interested in Lend-Lease and in the Soviet Air Force.
  • For a themed display case of the early Second World War in 1:72 scale.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Rather not. It is a short-run kit, which calls for more careful cleaning up and fitting of the parts. We recommend it to more experienced modelers.

It had the engine mounted behind the pilot in the middle of the fuselage, and a cannon fired along the axis of the propeller shaft. It had a nose wheel landing gear, which was uncommon when it appeared.

This kit covers the early D, F and K versions. The later Q-25 was a developmentally newer version with a different armament and different airframe detail.
