It is a resin kit for experienced modelers: the parts are not cut from sprues but sawn off casting blocks, they are glued with cyanoacrylate, and before building they have to be washed free of mold release agent. The kit is supplied by the SBS Model brand.
The Piaggio-Pegna is one of the most unusual aircraft ever built. The machine was designed by the engineer Giovanni Pegna at the end of the 1920s as an Italian contender for the Schneider Trophy seaplane races. Pegna decided to do without conventional floats, whose drag held back the take-off run: the fuselage was to float on the water by itself and during the run gradually rise above the surface on hydrofoils mounted beneath it. A marine propeller therefore served for the take-off run, and only once the aircraft had risen clear was the drive switched to an air propeller in the nose. It was a bold concept that did not prove itself in practice, and the aircraft never took part in the race. That makes it all the more interesting a subject for collectors of racing and record-breaking machines.
First wash all the parts in warm water with detergent, as mold release agent residue would otherwise prevent the primer and the glue from adhering. Saw the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw and do not snap them off. Do the sanding with respiratory protection, ideally wet. Resin is glued with cyanoacrylate, as polystyrene cement has no effect on it; on larger surfaces two-part epoxy helps, as it gives time to set the parts in place. Apply a filler primer before painting; it reveals small bubbles in the casting, which are filled with putty. The glossy finish of racing machines forgives little, so polish the surfaces carefully before painting.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted as a resin kit. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
