About product

Schulgleiter SG-38 1:72: a Brengun photo-etched accessory set

An accessory to a kit you already have, not a model of the glider in its own right. The Czech maker Brengun supplies the set as a photo-etched fret with parts that are cut out of it, bent and glued onto the plastic molding. The set is cut for the AZ Model or MPM kit, so the seating surfaces are designed directly for its shapes.

The real subject

The Schulgleiter SG-38 was a simple single-seat glider from the late 1930s, intended for basic flying training. Structurally it is an open girder frame with no fuselage shell, a seat on the forward part of the beam and a straight wing on struts. It was launched by bungee cord from a slope. For a modeler it is an interesting piece precisely because almost the whole structure is exposed and the viewer sees it all at once.

Why photo-etched parts pay off on an open structure

A machine with no fuselage skin is, from a modeling point of view, a collection of thin sections. But injected plastic has to thicken them considerably for the sake of the mold and of strength, so the frame looks bulky. Etched sheet a few tenths of a millimeter thick can render the same features in a proportion close to reality, and on a glider, where the structure is the main visual motif, that difference shows at first glance.

Tips for working it

Reckon on the parts being small and slender. Cut them out with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and level the remains of the tabs with a fine file rather than nippers. Make the bends in a bending tool, and on long thin sections slowly and evenly so that the part does not twist. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and spray it with a primer for metals. Glue with super glue applied on the tip of a wire; on long joints a slightly thicker glue is better, as it gives you time to position the part. Do not pick the assembled frame up by its thin members but by a solid section.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the SG-38 glider in 1:72 scale.
  • Anyone interested in gliding and the history of flying training.
  • More experienced builders who can handle very fine photo-etched parts.
  • Collectors who dislike a thickened plastic structure.

This is an accessory set, not a kit. The model, glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

You do not. The box holds photo-etched parts only. You obtain the plastic SG-38 kit separately.

Rather not. The parts of the exposed girder structure are thin and easily warped, so experience with photo-etched parts, a bending tool and tweezers with accurate jaws all help.

Injected plastic has to be thicker than the scale allows for the sake of the mold and of strength. Photo-etched parts are a few tenths of a millimeter thick, so the frame looks as slender as on the real machine.

Degrease them with alcohol, spray them with a primer for metals and only then paint. Without a primer the paint rubs off smooth sheet at every handling.
