About product

Stirling Mk.III 1:72, an Eduard photo-etched exterior

A photo-etched detail set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a model of the British heavy bomber Short Stirling Mk.III in 1:72 scale. According to the name the set is aimed at the outside of the aircraft, that is at the elements visible once the model is finished: covers, grilles, skin details and small airframe fittings. Injection-molded plastic is always thicker on these components than reality would call for; photo-etched metal has a scale thickness and on a large four-engine airframe the difference tells immediately. It is not a model of an aircraft but an accessory for a kit you already own. Eduard carries further sets for the same machine, for example a photo-etched interior, bomb bay, masks and combined bundles; the exact series designation decides the extent.

The real subject

The Short Stirling was the first four-engine heavy bomber to enter service with the Royal Air Force in the Second World War. It was powered by Bristol Hercules radial engines, had a tall landing gear and a roomy fuselage with a long bomb bay. The Mk.III version received more powerful engines and revised defensive turrets. Because of its limited ceiling, the Stirling was later reassigned to transport, towing and special duties, where it served until the end of the war.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

Separate the parts with a sharp knife on a hard surface and make the folds in a bender or between two blades. Glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue in the smallest quantity; a surplus floods the fine texture. Degrease the metal and spray a primer before painting, otherwise the paint will chip during handling. With external parts it works well to attach them only after the airframe has been primed and to touch them in afterwards, so that the thin edges stay crisp. Before gluing, check whether the corresponding plastic detail has to be removed from the kit; two layers would sit crooked.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of British bombers in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who care about a faithful exterior and scale part thickness
  • More experienced builders used to photo-etch and tweezers
  • Competition modelers and collectors of large cabinet models

This is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a fret of photo-etched metal parts for a Short Stirling Mk.III plastic kit in 1:72 scale that you already own.

The set is aimed at the external parts of the aircraft, that is at what is visible once the model is finished. The interior of the same machine is covered by a different set.

With some parts yes: the plastic detail that the photo-etched part replaces has to be removed first. The procedure is described in the instructions inside the package.

External parts are usually glued on after the airframe has been primed and are then touched in with a brush. The thin edges stay crisp that way and do not get flooded with paint.
