About product

Double-sided masking templates for the Tachikawa Ki-54 Hei in 1:72 scale

This item is not a model or a photo-etched set but a set of masks for the Special Hobby kit. The self-adhesive film is cut in advance to the shape of the cockpit frames and the side windows, that is, the areas that are covered while spraying. The template is peeled off, stuck onto the clear part, the framing is sprayed and once the paint has dried the mask is lifted off. On a twin-engine aircraft with a glazed cockpit and a row of windows in the fuselage, this procedure really does save a great many hours.

The double-sided version. According to the name the set is double-sided, so it allows for the inner side of the glazing as well. That pays off on this type: the cockpit and the fuselage can be seen into through the windows, and frames treated only from outside look like bare transparent plastic from inside. Stick the inner masks on and spray the frames before the fuselage is closed up.

The real subject

The Ki-54 was a Japanese twin-engine all-metal low-wing aircraft used for crew training and for liaison and transport duties. It existed in several versions that differed mainly in interior equipment; the designation Hei belongs to one of them. The Allies listed the type under the code name Hickory. The glazing is broken up and makes up a prominent part of the appearance of a finished model.

Usage tips

Wash the glazing, degrease it and let it dry. Carry the templates with tweezers and press the edges down carefully; on long narrow frames paint runs under most easily. Spray thin coats. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, with a pull along the surface. Spray the inner sides of the frames in the interior color before the fuselage is glued up and set the clear parts in with a glue that does not fog transparent plastic.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of the Ki-54 model in 1:72 scale
  • For modelers who want clean frames when looking in through the windows too
  • For those who do not want to trim dozens of frames by hand
  • Suitable for less experienced builders as well

The set contains masking templates only, not the aircraft model, paints or glue, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a set of masking templates; you need your own Ki-54 kit in 1:72 scale.

The double-sided set allows for the inner side of the glazing as well, which tells a great deal on an aircraft with many windows.

Before the fuselage is closed up and the clear parts are seated; later you can no longer reach them.

Press the edges down with a toothpick and spray several thin coats instead of one heavy one.
