About product

1:72 TBM-3S2 Avenger, J.M.S.D.F. 3rd Service School, a Hasegawa Kit

This injection-molded plastic kit from the Japanese brand Hasegawa in 1:72 scale represents the TBM-3S2, the postwar anti-submarine conversion of the carrier-based Avenger as operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The package is devoted to the machines of a training school.

The real subject

The Avenger came about during the Second World War as a carrier-based torpedo bomber and became one of the most widespread types of its category. After the war a number of machines were rebuilt for anti-submarine work: the version designated S carried search and strike equipment and worked in a pair with a version fitted with a search radar. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force took over Avengers converted in this way in the 1950s and used them for training and for patrol duties alike, until more modern types replaced them. In its design it is a single-engine mid-wing monoplane with a bulky fuselage, a roomy bomb bay and folding wings for operating from a deck; the postwar conversions changed mainly the equipment of the cabin, the glazing and the equipment carried, not the basic shape of the airframe.

Building and painting tips

The roomy cabin of the Avenger is clearly in view during the build, so it pays to spend time finishing it before the fuselage is glued together. The glazing is extensive; mask it before spraying and glue it with an adhesive for clear parts. The cowling with the radial engine calls for careful centering, so that the propeller sits on the axis. A single-color naval finish looks best when it is brought to life with a fine shading of the panels and a mild bringing out of the engraved lines; a uniform area otherwise looks flat on a model. Spray a gloss varnish before the decals; a final matte or semi-gloss varnish unifies the surface. Keep the weathering restrained, as postwar training machines tended to be well looked after.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of carrier aircraft and postwar naval hardware in 1:72 scale.
  • Modelers looking for a less usual version of a well-known type.
  • Builders with experience of masking extensive glazing.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the postwar anti-submarine conversion of the Avenger. The version with the letter S carried search and strike equipment and worked in a pair with a machine fitted with a search radar.

The basic type comes from the war, but this version and its Japanese service belong to the postwar period. The color scheme matches that.

You will find details of the contents of the package on the manufacturer's packaging. The package is devoted to the machines of a training school.

Mask the clear parts before spraying and glue them with an adhesive intended for glazing. Finish the interior of the cabin before you glue the fuselage halves together.
