An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet naval aircraft Tu-142MR with the NATO reporting name Bear-J in 1:72 scale from Trumpeter. It is a very large and demanding model with a great wingspan, a high part count, a detailed cockpit and clear parts for the glazing. Because of its size, count on plenty of room both for building and for display. Check the exact package contents and the number of parts against the enclosed instructions.
The Tu-142 is a naval aircraft derived from the Tu-95 family of strategic bombers, NATO reporting name Bear, with the same turboprop power and contra-rotating propellers. The Tu-142MR Bear-J version served as an airborne relay station for communication with submarines carrying strategic missiles. For that purpose it carried special equipment including a very long trailing wire antenna. Its great range let it operate over the ocean for many hours and keep the high command in contact with the submarine forces.
Given the size, give attention to a firm bond of the main fuselage and wing parts with liquid cement for plastic, and glue the fine and clear parts with cyanoacrylate glue. Paint and complete the cockpit and the glazing before closing them up, and protect the transparent parts with a mask. Large surfaces are better painted with an airbrush over a good base, and the panel lines are best picked out with a subtle wash. Fit the contra-rotating propellers, the antennas and the landing gear at the end of the build.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
