This kit belongs to a line in which the manufacturer standardizes the models not by scale but by the resulting length of the finished model, which is approximately 200 mm. Each type of aircraft is therefore reduced by a different ratio, and models from this line cannot be put together into a scale-consistent display case beside ordinary 1:72 or 1:48 kits. The point of the line is to offer quickly built models of a uniform size. The model is injection-molded in polystyrene and is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the particular number of parts and the way they join are given in the instructions in the package.
The Chengdu J-20, nicknamed Mighty Dragon, is a Chinese twin-engined fighter designed with the emphasis on reducing radar signature. Its characteristic silhouette comes from the canards ahead of the main wing, the intersecting slopes of the fuselage sides and the splayed vertical tails. The canard layout is unusual on aircraft of this category and, together with the long, smoothly shaped fuselage, forms one of the most recognizable modern aircraft shapes. The model therefore appeals beyond a narrowly modeling audience as well.
Models in this line tend to have fewer parts and a simpler breakdown than full scale kits, yet it pays to fill and sand the seams, because on the smooth surfaces of low-signature aircraft every unevenness shows. Apply the gray shades in thin coats over a primer and liven up the individual panels with a slight change of tone, so that the surface does not look flat. Avoid overdone emphasis of the panel lines; modern machines with smooth transitions look more convincing with discreet paneling. Mask the cockpit glazing and clear coat it together with the fuselage, so that the frames line up.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
