About product

Flat brass stanchions with three holes, 18 mm (20 pieces) — Constructo

Railing stanchions are set into the deck or into the edge of the hull and carry the horizontal lines of the railing. This variant is flat, made of brass, 18 mm high and has three holes one above the other, so it carries three rows of wire. There are twenty pieces in the package, which is usually enough for a continuous run of railing. It is not a ship kit, but individual fittings for fitting one out.

What the accessory is for

A railing is one of the most noticeable details of a finished model and at the same time the thing that shows the care of the builder most. Series-made fittings guarantee that all the stanchions have the same height and the same spacing of the holes, which is hard to achieve by hand. A flat profile is an advantage in smaller scales, where a round stanchion would look disproportionately heavy. Stanchions are used on decks, bridges and gangways; they suit as a replacement for parts in a kit that do not suit you in size, and builds from your own documentation as well.

Installation and painting tips

First mark out the spacing and help yourself with a simple template from a strip of card, so that all the stanchions stand at right angles and in one line. Pre-drill the holes in the deck and glue the stanchions with super glue or epoxy. Degrease the brass before gluing and before painting, otherwise neither the joint nor the paint will hold. For painting, use a primer for metal surfaces. Thread the wire through only once the glue has dried completely and tension it gradually from one end, not from the middle, otherwise you will pull the stanchions out of line. If you want to keep the metal look, it is enough to knock the surface back and seal it with a clear varnish.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of wooden ship models
  • Modelers who need a uniform railing along the whole length of the deck
  • Anyone interested in building from their own documentation
  • Those who repair and complete older models

The accessory is supplied unpainted, without glue and without wire. It is not a ship kit, but individual fittings.

FAQ

Each hole carries one horizontal row of railing wire. A stanchion with three holes therefore carries a triple railing.

No. It is separate small fittings, which are set onto the deck of a finished or part-built ship model.

The contents of the package are stated on the packaging of the accessory. Reckon with obtaining the wire separately.

Degrease the brass first, apply a primer for metal surfaces and only after that the paint. Without a primer the coat rubs off as the wire is tensioned.
