Three flat aluminum plates measuring 75 x 25 x 2 mm, which serve as a firm backing under abrasive paper. The color finish is green and within this range that is the only difference, while the contents of the set stay the same.

Why not to sand with your fingers

When the paper is held between your fingers, the pressure concentrates into a few points and the soft backing follows the shape of the part. The result is that more comes off the seam than was planned and the surrounding edges round off. The model gives it away only once sprayed, when a wave appears in the reflection. A rigid backing holds the paper in a plane, the pressure is spread over the whole surface and material comes away where it stands proud, not all round. A thin plate can also be slid between parts, so the sanding stays under control even in places that block-shaped boards cannot reach.

• Truing a glued and puttied seam on a fuselage or hull.
• Removing the remains of a sprue gate on a flat surface without creating a hollow.
• Truing the mating surface of a part before gluing.
• Work both dry and wet, according to the paper you stick onto the plate.
